These exciting Matryoshka Nesting Dolls certainly are not from the nineteenth century.. although their ancestors first appeared back then! Originally inspired by souvenir dolls from Japan , the name Matryoshka comes from a popular Russian female name of the time, Matryona or Matriosha. The name Babushka, meaning Grandmother, is also often used for these dolls.
