Lake Ontario, situated in Canada, south of Toronto, is one of the five Great Lakes.
First Nations peoples, including the Huron-Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe have paddled Lake Ontario for more than 10,000 years. In fact the name, Lake Ontario, is derived from the Iroquois, Ontario meaning "lake of shining water" or "Great Lake." The Haudenosaunee , "Oniatario " means "beautiful lake" or "shining water".
Today, Lake Ontario is enjoyed by many Canadians as a place for swimming , boating, fishing, and ice skating.
As of 2026, over 60 people have successfully swum across Lake Ontario. The first was a Canadian, Marilyn Bell, in 1954 at age 15!!
Presqu'ile Point, featured in this design, is a scenic peninsula located on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Brighton, Ontario.
