The Leslie Street Spit is a human-made headland extending from the tip of Leslie street in a southwesterly direction into Lake Ontario. It is about 5 kilometres long. The Toronto Port Authority has been lake filling to create the Spit for over five decades.
Much of the Spit is classified as an environmentally sensitive area, and recognized as an important bird area. Three hundred 300 species of birds have been identified on the spit, with 45 of those breeding on the Spit.
Tommy Thompson Park, at the north end of the Spit, (named after a former Toronto Parks Commissioner), is pure parkland, and offers some of the best views of Toronto.
Prior to the 17th century, the surrounding area would have been inhabited by First Nations people including the Mississaugas, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples.
